Every year the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame announces its inductees and reminds us what a diverse, wonderful, giving province we live in.
Let’s start with Joan Phipps, who set numerous firsts for a female jockey in the 1970s and after retiring became a track steward. Lucas Makowsky won a gold medal in speed skating at the 2010 Olympics and is now an ambassador for the sport. Terry Livingstone volunteered time for Special Olympics after 35 years of competing in speed skating, floor hockey, softball, athletics, swimming and bowling.
Lori Ebbeson has been a triathlon referee and served on boards at the provincial, national and international levels for 17 years. In gymnastics, Stuart Cram started helping as a judge, coach and official in 1962, plus he compiled results and organized events. Guyle Fielder was perhaps the best player in hockey’s minor leagues; his scoring exploits and sportsmanship are legendary. And Dave “Tiger” Williams, who holds the NHL record for penalty minutes, is now nearly as well-known for visiting Canadian troops abroad.
They will be officially inducted September 20 at the Regina Conexus Arts Centre.
