Sorry. That’s a bad joke that might not work in radio. There will never be another “u” missing from the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ Plaza of Honour. Since its inception 30 years ago, under the guidance of Gord Staseson, there was no “u” in the word honour. It was the American spelling of the word and it regularly required an explanation.
The accompanying dinner was a must-see fundraising event. But this year the community-owned team is changing the format, moving it to Mosaic Stadium, making it into more of a reception on Sept. 22 and introducing different price levels. Whatever the Roughriders want to do, it’s their event.
They made good choices this year. Brandvold, a former volunteer chairman of the Riders, spent 10 years on the executive committee. Cates was a tailback who could run, catch and for five seasons in Saskatchewan he blocked like an offensive lineman. Both were Plaza-worthy members of past Grey Cup champions.
