Regina road and sewer construction begins

Get ready to avoid orange zones for the next several months as the City of Regina begins its construction season.

Work has already begun at several locations across the city, including the Ring Road.

“There’s work that needs to be done everywhere, we want to spread the work out across the city so that residents in all areas can see the benefits,” explained Norm Kyle with road maintenance.

This year, the city is investing $70 million in transportation, water, wastewater and drainage.

There are 68 projects featuring 19.8 kilometres of roadways scheduled for construction in 2017.

This year’s projects include:

• Residential roads – $12 million
• Arterial, collector and expressway renewal – $13.5 million
• Bridges – $5.9 million
• Water, wastewater and drainage – $38 million

“In an unprecedented year when we have had to re-open our budget and make significant adjustments, we are ensuring that our infrastructure investments remain whole,” Mayor Michael Fougere said in a news release. “Our residents have told us streets and sidewalks and safe drinking water are of the utmost importance, so we are ensuring that we keep our community safe and maintain the quality of our vital assets.”

The City maintains 21 bridges over waterways, 19 overpasses over roadways and railways, eight rail underpasses, 36 pedestrian bridges and 12 km of guardrails. In addition to a maintenance program to improve structure longevity, 2017 construction includes:

• Ring Road Southbound over Victoria Avenue – major rehabilitation
• Wascana Parkway over Ring Road – major rehabilitation

With the amount of work being done across the Regina, the city is reminding drivers to slow down and check their routes to avoid any construction delays.
