Road near La Loche claims Sask. worst road title

After two straight years, Highway 354 near Dilke has been dethroned as Saskatchewan’s worst road.

The 2017 CAA Saskatchewan Worst Roads campaign wrapped up – and after receiving a record 6,496 votes – Highway 155 near La Loche has been received the dubious honour.

The road was ninth in 2016, moving up from 10th place in 2015.

It wasn’t a long fall from grace for the Dilke roadway. It placed second in the 2017 campaign, with Highway 21 at Paradise Hill ranking third. 

The campaign ran from April 3 to 28 and drivers, cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians voted for the roads.

“This year’s final top ten includes a few nominated roads from previous worst roads campaigns. This perhaps tells us that road users still have some safety concerns,” Christine Niemczyk, director of communications with CAA Saskatchewan, said in a news release.

Voters identified potholes as the number one problem.

The results of the campaign will be shared with government officials and departments including the ministry of highways.

The final top 10 is:

1. Saskatchewan 155 – La Loche (Ranked #9 in 2016 and #10 in 2015 CAA Worst Roads Campaigns)
2. Saskatchewan 354 – Dilke (Ranked #1 in 2016 and 2015 CAA Worst Roads Campaigns)
3. Highway 21 – Paradise Hill
4. Saskatchewan 47 – Springside (Ranked #6 in 2016 & #7 in 2015 CAA Worst Roads Campaigns)
5. Saskatchewan 26 – Loon Lake
6. Saskatchewan 255 – Nipawin
7. Saskatchewan 35 – Love
8. Second Avenue South – Hepburn
9. Saskatchewan 322 – Silton (Ranked #3 in 2016 and 2015 CAA Worst Roads Campaigns)
10. Saskatchewan 51 – Kerrobert (Ranked #2 in 2016 Campaign)
