As sentencing hearing continues, La Loche still coping

More supports are being sent to La Loche to help them deal with the gruesome details coming out in the sentencing hearing for the shooter convicted of last January’s massacre.

A corrections worker says the teen gunman who went on a shooting rampage, killing four, often talks about other mass shootings “with a smile.”

A sentencing hearing is underway in Meadow Lake to determine whether the teen will be sentenced as a youth or adult.

“It’s still so hard to imagine that someone did what the did,” said Leonard Montgrand, Friendship Centre Executive Director in La Loche. 

Montgrand says as more details come out about the January 22nd massacre, many residents are saying “it’s too much.” But he says it’s also proof that everyone needs to change the way they think of northern communities like La Loche.

“Communities in northern Saskatchewan need help.”

Montgrand says the government needs to help with economic development to improve life in the north.
