Supporters rally in one last attempt to save STC

It might as well have been a funeral in a very quiet Saskatchewan Transportation Company bus depot in Regina.

Wednesday is the last day for passenger service and apart from about a dozen people, the building was near to empty.

“The most saddest and terrible day there is in Saskatchewan that I have experienced in my lifetime, even after losing my dear parents and relatives and close friends and everything,” Percy Legebokoff exclaimed.

From the Yorkton area, the senior said he, and many like him, don’t know how they will get to medical appointments without the provincial bus company.

“This is unreal the people are stuck and everything, well, (the government is) saving money (but) give more money to potash and the big shots,” Legebokoff said angrily.

The NDP is urging the government to reconsider, arguing there is other options available.

“Pushing forward a cut to the biggest corporations, a loss of $60 million a year, an unneeded tax cut at this time,” leader Trent Wotherspoon argued. “Those are dollars that certainly could be deployed to keep STC rolling.”

Supporters of STC are gathering to mourn and rally at the major bus depots Wednesday evening as the last buses roll in and out.

“We have always travelled on STC and everything for everything, how dare they do this to the people, this is total dictatorship what they are doing,” Legebokoff said.
