The ticky-tack offside challenges being called in the Stanley Cup playoffs are teaching the linesmen something: They should whistle down every close offside!
Twice in two games between Pittsburgh and Nashville, close non-offside calls have been overturned by video review challenges. Both times goals were disallowed because, several seconds before the goal, a player’s skate preceded the puck across the blue line.
It took several minutes of intense video study to decide that the players were actually offside. And really, the offside didn’t directly lead to the goal.
NHL officials have to make their decisions instantaneously. If they stop the play for an offside call, that can’t be overturned.
It’s smarter for the official to blow his whistle, stop the play and avoid the embarrassment of being proven wrong.
What a stupid rule!
