It was nice to see Jays’ general manager Ross Atkins talk in realities rather than fruitless hope for the 2017 season.
Atkins knows it’s over and being sellers at the deadline is pretty well their only option, unless they get a deal to bring in what he calls a controllable asset – a player who they know can contribute in years to come.
Yes, next year country is here for the Blue Jays and I think, or at least I hope, all fans have now just accepted that.
Jose Bautista shouldn’t have been brought back and now the Jays have people kicking tires on Josh Donaldson or Marco Estrada. That wouldn’t make much sense for a team who thinks they can get back to the playoffs next year.
You can blame injuries all you want, but the team just wasn’t good enough from the rotation to the bull pen to the lineup.
But I’m not expecting a major fire sale in the next week but big changes should be coming this off-season, including a good hard look at the manager.
