The City of Regina is trying to do its part to keep streets and neighbourhoods free of litter.
The city announced Friday it will install blue recycling bottle baskets — attached to existing garbage cans — in the downtown core and along 13th Avenue in the Cathedral neighbourhood.
The purpose of the baskets is to help reduce litter in the city, and to divert recyclable material away from the landfill.
“There are large quantities of empty beverage containers going into the garbage when they could be recycled,” said Amy McNeil, the executive director of SARC/SARCAN Recycling, in a news release Friday.
Contributions from the SARCAN Public Space Recycling Grant helped make the baskets a reality, as the money supports local community recycling initiatives.
Saskatoon and other cities in British Columbia have seen a successful implementation of the baskets.
