After a week out of the basement, the Saskatchewan Roughriders fell back down the stairs with a 48-28 loss in Winnipeg.
Rider fans may be upset about a few things, but the loss can be attributed to a few wacky coaching decisions — why did they try two trick kicks? — and three crucial mistakes. Winnipeg scored touchdowns on a punt return, an interception return and shortly after the Riders mistakenly tried to return a missed field goal. Those three mistakes accounted for 21 points, which made all the difference in a 20-point ballgame.
Five weeks ago the Riders were looking at a revealing five-game stretch against Western opponents. They emerged with three victories and, with their 5-5 overall record, have shown they can compete with the CFL’s top teams.
They will, however, need quarterback Kevin Glenn to be healthy. Glenn was injured in Winnipeg. That’s a loss they can’t overcome.
