Has anybody changed the narrative about themselves quicker than Alexander Ovechkin?
Before the NHL season started he was ranked outside of the top 20 on TSN’s Top 50 list for the first time in his career.
If you look at headlines written about Ovechkin over the summer they were about how he lost a step. I remember pondering whether or not it’s time the Washington Capitals move on from their long-time captain after yet another early exit in the playoffs.
Well, if you were to redo the Top 50, Ovechkin is no doubt in the top 20.
He’s scored eight goals in the first four games of the season and instead of talk that Ovechkin has lost a step and if he’s lost his passion for the game we’re speculating on Ovechkin scoring 50 goals in 50 games. That would be a feat not seen since Brett Hull in 1991-92 season.
So what happened? Ovechkin took that loss in the playoffs personal, cut weight and with fewer pounds is a step quicker.
While we are only a week into the season, I think it’s safe to say news of Ovechkin’s decline has been premature.
