Saskatchewan Roughriders fans can stand and cheer Darian Durant if they want.
It’s the fans’ choice. It’s not up to the CFL team to honour Durant, a former Riders quarterback who returns to Saskatchewan Friday with the Montreal Alouettes.
It would actually be hypocritical for the Riders to plan a formal program feting Durant.
Even though he had an outstanding career with the green and white — and led them to a hometown Grey Cup victory in 2013 — the team last year offered him a substantial pay cut. When Durant balked, they decided they didn’t want him and traded him.
NHL teams have done video welcome-backs for players like Taylor Hall and Martin St. Louis. So have NBA teams, although the Cleveland Cavaliers aborted their controversial plan to honour Kyrie Irving.
In these days when everyone watches the video boards, there’s nothing wrong with flashing a screenshot of Darian Durant. If the fans applaud— which they likely will — it would be a spontaneous and sincere reaction. The best kind of tribute.
