Dave Dickenson and Marc Trestman are the finalists for the coach of the year award and very well could be meeting in the Grey Cup to prove that they were the coach of the year.
But what if they aren’t?
What if Jason Maas and Chris Jones lead the Eskimos and Riders to the Grey Cup, leading late-season charges to solidify their playoff spot and then finish off with two road victories?
Shouldn’t one of them represent the West against Trestman for coach of the year?
The voting changed two years ago, to eliminate voting after the Grey Cup was handed out and I understand why. Too often it was just a ‘gimme’ that the coach of the year went to the Grey Cup champ, but I still think playoff success needs to be part of the equation.
And while I do believe Chris Jones without the East semifinal win was good enough to be the Western rep, a win in the East final would clinch it for me on which coach did the best job this season.
And it’ll be too bad we eliminated him from winning already.
