Wet, heavy snow fell on everyone as we trooped into Ottawa’s TD Place for Sunday’s Grey Cup game between the Toronto Argonauts and Calgary Stampeders.
“Instant classic!”
Snow games provide the most watchable football. And this one did.
Outplayed until the very end, Toronto kicked a last-minute field goal to upset Calgary 27-24. There was a 100-yard touchdown catch by DeVier Posey and a 110-yard fumble return by Cassius Vaughn. Toronto’s 38-year-old quarterback Ricky Ray is a four-time champion as a starter who might retire in the offseason.
This was another last-minute choke by the Stampeders, who are consistently the CFL’s best regular-season team but lost the last two Grey Cups in heart-wrenching fashion.
Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, a gunslinger til the end, had his final pass intercepted in the end zone. Blue and white confetti exploded all over the turf to honor the Argos, but this didn’t need to be shovelled away.
