The Canadian Football League has a change at the top of the officiating hierarchy with Glen Johnson retiring.
If you were the new guy, where would you put in work?
Johnson’s exit didn’t come without recommendations. He told the Green Zone, he’d like to see development for CFL officials start at lower levels of football, where collegiate officials are given the opportunity to do more games.
Since he started, Johnson has wanted to see a bigger pool of quality officials for the league to bring in. And that comes with investment.
This is an area where Commissioner Randy Ambrosie can make an impact. Investment in officials. The NFL is moving to hiring full-time officials.
Imagine that, refs who work and train like players during the season.
The other and more noticeable change will come with video review. The league made changes during the season but it still isn’t perfect.
And that’s just it. We can’t expect the officials or review to be perfect, but they can be better. It’s up to the league to establish better resources to make that happen.
