For 20 kids in the city, Wednesday wasn’t a typical day for them.
The Cornwall Centre paired up with the Regina Police Service for the 3rd annual CopShop. An event that gives kids a chance to purchase gifts for themselves along with family members.
Police chief Evan Bray said the day started off in the best way.
” First of all we got a ride in a limo listening to Christmas music, so that’s a good way to start your day any day,” he said. “(They’re) pumped to be shopping!”
Twenty kids in total were picked from school resource officers or from the Regina Intersectoral Partnership program. Each child was partnered with a police officer from different platoons to shop with.
The kids were treated to a $200 gift card for the mall which they could spend all on themselves, all on family members or a mix of both.
“I think the real important and heartwarming thing to remember is my little guy Jacob has a list of things he wants to buy — most of which is for family,” Bray said.

The kids were given around an hour and a half to shop the entire mall. Nine-year-old Marcus Wallington knew from the start where he was going to first.
“Shoes! ” Wallington said with excitement. He said he already had his mind set on a camo pair of Adidas.

Each child also received a voucher for a new pair of jeans from The Gap and a pair of mittens from The Bay.
Wallington said he didn’t want to waste any time in the days leading up to this event, so his mom put pants in his size on hold at The Gap.
“That’s the smartest way to shop,” said Const. Mitch Weibe who was paired with Wallington.
Afterwards the pair headed to get one more item for Wallington at a gaming store and then he made sure there was money left over to spend on his mom.

“I was thinking my mom really likes Bath and Bodyworks so I’m thinking of getting her some really nice lotion that she might like … she likes the scent like vanilla bean noel,” Wallington said.

At the end of the day each kid gets to have a snack and share what cool items they purchased with the other kids that are at the event.
Volunteers also helped wrap the gifts kids purchased for family members.
