Authorities are reporting multiple injuries and fatalities after an Amtrak passenger train derailed on a bridge over a busy highway south of Seattle.
The train derailed about 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Seattle before 8 a.m. Monday, spilling at least one train car on to busy Interstate 5.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s office said in a tweet that the train was heading southbound and that there were “injuries and casualties.” A later tweet said that some motorists on the highway below were hit and injured.
Authorities have confirmed three people are dead, down from six reported earlier in the day.
According to City of DuPont Fire Chief Larry Creekmore, more than 100 patients were transported for treatment Monday after the train went off the track and sent 13 cars onto a highway below.
All southbound lanes of Interstate 5 were closed and drivers were being warned to avoid the area.
