As the years roll past it’s getting harder to remember the previous year’s champions.
Let’s see: New England Patriots, Golden State Warriors, Pittsburgh Penguins, Houston Astros and Toronto Argonauts. That covers the major team sports. Brad Gushue and Rachel Homan won their respective Canadian curling championships. Sergio Garcia won the 2017 Masters. Sung Hyun Park won the Women’s U.S. Open. Roger Federer and Garbine Muguruza won at Wimbledon.
There are so many more amateur, professional and college champions in so many different sports, all worthy of note but so often lost in the parade and the fog of time.
If you’re a fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, you remember 2013. Chicago Cubs? 2016. Calgary Flames? 1989. Otherwise, they blur together, distinguishable only by sports fanatics and Internet search engines.
And now we get another chance to add to the list of winners, complete with a Winter Olympics ahead on the calendar. We can hardly wait. Happy New Year!
