When Saskatchewan’s Mark McMorris guested on the Green Zone little more than a year ago to discuss his snowboarding career and fundraising events, he left his cellphone charging on a table.
A little sheepishly, McMorris later used a friend’s phone to call his cell. Where did he leave it? Could he come and pick it up?
Sure. After hanging up we chuckled, thinking “He’s really nice. And still such a kid.”
A few months later, we agonized as he recovered from life-threatening injuries in a back-country boarding accident. And we watched in awe this weekend as he graciously, tenaciously, unbelievably, won another Olympic medal in his favourite sport. And we realized he’s not a kid at all. He’s one of the most courageous, admirable young men we’ve ever met.
