Referees are way smarter than hockey players.
As proof, look to the Toronto-Tampa Bay NHL game when the Lightning’s Cedric Paquette disgustedly tossed a glove at referee Gord Dwyer. Paquette was upset a penalty wasn’t called when he ran into Tyler Bozak’s elbow. No penalty should have been called and Paquette had no business showing up Dwyer.
Dwyer scooped up the glove and carried it until he followed the play past Tampa Bay’s bench. Dwyer emphatically threw the glove onto the floor at Paquette’s feet. It wasn’t going to hit him and certainly wouldn’t hurt him, but it caused Paquette and a few teammates to start screaming.
Now, who made their point better? As usual, the official did. Dwyer didn’t start the confrontation and he didn’t blatantly upstage Paquette. And who looked more foolish? As usual, it was the players. And remember, this commentary was done by a former hockey official.
