Curlers are the best!
Of all the athletes in all the sports covered by the media, none are more approachable than curlers. The last time I heard of a curler turning down an interview request she was being whisked away for a drug test.
Curlers don’t say things that are “off the record.” They’re honest, emotional, opinionated and accessible. Reporters can often call them at home. The sport has very few prima donnas.
Curlers usually come from humble backgrounds and earn humble paycheques, but it doesn’t mean they’re shy about sharing their thoughts or promoting their sport. And if they miss a shot, they admit it.
With the Brier being held this week in Regina, it’s a reminder that some of the best interview subjects have been curlers. That group includes Sandra Schmirler, Colleen Jones, Randy Ferbey, Brad Gushue, Jill Officer, Ben Hebert and Glenn Howard. They may throw in-turns and out-turns, but they’re also straight shooters.
