Following a successful run in 2017, Operation Bus Cop is back.
For the next few weeks, Regina Police Service (RPS) traffic safety officers will ride city transit buses watching for distracted drivers and those on their cellphones.
Riding a bus gives police a good vantage point to gather evidence and work in tandem with police in marked cars, who will safely stop and ticket offending drivers.
Operation Bus Cop is not just used to remind drivers of the laws around distracted driving, but also aimed at raising awareness of the risks associated with using a cellphone behind the wheel.
According to the RPS, distracted driving is the number one cause of traffic collisions in Saskatchewan.
In 2016, distracted drivers caused nearly 8,300 crashes in the province, and were also the number one cause of collision injuries with 1,205 reports.
That same year, distracted driving was a second-leading factor in traffic deaths, with 42 fatalities.
The RPS hopes Operation Bus Cop will reduce the number of distracted driving incidents in the city.
