Ryan Suter was Adam Herold’s hero.
Now it’s the other way around. Herold was the youngest player killed in the Humboldt Broncos’ bus crash, he was just six days short of his 17th birthday.
Before every Midget AAA hockey game with the Regina Pat Canadians, Herold and his teammates told each other which NHL player they were emulating. According to a note his former teammates sent to Suter, Herold always chose the Minnesota Wild’s all-star defenceman.
Maybe other sports, other professions, react this way: the hockey way.
Suter, who recently suffered a fractured right ankle that will sideline him for the rest of the season, responded with a gracious note on social media. Suter read about the promising, young player and said he wished he heard about this as Herold “lined up alongside me on NHL ice in a few years.” And Suter closed by writing something unforgettable:
“I’ll never forget your tribute, Adam. Thank you.”
