Seventy-seven newly installed automated licence plate readers (ALPRs) are now in use around Saskatchewan thanks to new funding from SGI.
The government’s insurance agency recently invested $2.3 million for the technology.
Of those 77 ALPRs, 69 were used in commercial and conservation enforcement vehicles. The other eight were dispersed among the Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan teams in Regina, Prince Albert and Moose Jaw.
The device is mounted on top of conservation or police cruisers and scans up to one licence plate per second. It will send alerts to the officer if the plates are matched to stolen vehicles, Amber Alerts, vehicles connected to crime, uninsured vehicles and suspended drivers.
In total, SGI has funded 136 ALPRs in the province.
