The summer construction season has started and the City of Regina has put out a list of all the city streets scheduled to be upgraded this year.
The total investment in construction projects that could impact your drive to work is worth $85.3 million including wastewater, water and drainage projects worth $50 million plus residential road renewal and arterial, collector and expressway renewal.
The city is planning 51 construction projects to upgrade 16.1 kilometres of residential roads. Some of the highlights include:
- A rebuild on Chinook Road from Orchard Crescent to Dufferin Road
- A renewal project on Garnet Street from Sunset Drive to Parliament Avenue
- A preservation project on Stapleford Crescent from Sherwood Drive to Pasqua Street
These projects come at a cost of $14.7 million and are funded through the annual one per cent mill rate increase dedicated to the Residential Road Renewal Program (RRRP).
The city takes three different approaches to maintaining these streets based on the level of need. Thin-lift projects involve repairing localized issues and repaving the street. Rehab work involves repairing or replacing sidewalks, curbs and gutters to improve drainage and pedestrian safety, streets are also milled which means top layers of old, worn asphalt is removed and then repaved. A complete rebuild means making water and wastewater repairs along with complete concrete replacement and rebuilding the entire surface of the road.
You can find the full list of road projects broken down by Ward number online.
When it comes to major arterial and expressway roads, the city is investing $13.5 million for 15 projects covering 8.9 kilometres. Major projects include paving Arcola Avenue from Woodland Grove to Prince of Wales Drive and Dewdney Avenue from Albert Street to Elphinstone.
The city is also investing $7.6 million into bridges.
The $50 million investment into wastewater, water and drainage projects include: relining 24 kilometres of wastewater pipes an replacing large-diameter cast iron watermains, along with various lead service connection replacements, pump station upgrades and fire hydrant replacements.
