The anthem file is crossing the desk of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and it is quite predictable.
A few months ago when the league stated that players must stand for the national anthem or stay in the locker room, it was also reported that they didn’t consult the players association.
So Tuesday, the union grievance was filed.
A few days ago, President Donald Trump who fanned the flames calling players SOBs for not standing, said the new policy may be worse than the players kneeling. Never mind, he said he somewhat liked the policy when it was first announced. But let’s not hold Trump accountable for his actual words, being as how the US electorate didn’t back in 2016.
Goodell could have stood by his players, stood up to the bully in the White House and this wouldn’t be a story anymore. But like domestic violence or the Patriots deflating footballs, he’s letting negative stories linger and fester.
Maybe that’s the reason ratings drop and attendance is down and not so much a half dozen guys taking a knee.
