Darrell Davis: CFL shows strength opposing sexual assault

Teague Sherman’s case almost got lost in the news cycle.

The Canadian defensive back was released Saturday by the CFL’s Ottawa Redblacks, who said afterwards they knew Sherman had been charged with two counts of sexual assault.

Evidently, the Redblacks decided the charges had some merit, even though they didn’t specifically announce them as the reasons for Sherman’s release. There’s always a danger that an athlete is unfairly charged, so it’s important for his team to conduct some investigations.

The CFL subsequently told all nine teams the league would not register any contracts involving Sherman. A report Wednesday insisted one Western team was interested in signing Sherman.

In their announcements, the CFL and Redblacks stated they took their stance opposing all forms of sexual assault seriously. And they did it without ruling on Sherman’s guilt or innocence — a duty that is still best left to the courts.
