The Saskatchewan Rush are continuing to collect trophies, even though their season ended two months ago.
Assistant captain Mark Matthews was named league MVP by the National Lacrosse League (NLL) on Tuesday, after leading the Rush and everyone else in individual points — marking 116 on the season.
Matthews set an NLL record for assists in the 2018 season as well, recording 84 on the year and leading the Rush to their third championship in four seasons.
The 28-year-old forward from Oshawa, Ont. has spent his entire career with the Rush, between Edmonton and Saskatchewan. He was the first overall pick in the 2012 NLL draft and was named the 2013 rookie of the year.
Despite his prowess, the MVP award on Tuesday marked the first time Matthews has won the honours.
The announcement comes days after Rush head coach Derek Keenan was named coach of the year.
