Jon Ryan saw it coming.
Once the Seahawks traded up in the 2018 NFL draft to select University of Texas punter Michael Dickson, Ryan realized his 10 seasons with Seattle were coming to an end. Ryan didn’t pout.
Reports from Seahawks camp told of Ryan tutoring the youngster, helping Dickson with his technique and teaching him the nuances of being an NFL punter. Ryan ultimately asked for his release and began thanking everyone responsible for his success with the Seahawks, which included a Super Bowl victory. Then he went to a local bar for tequila shots, the beverages he was drinking during the NFL draft.
Ryan may get another NFL job. He played with the Green Bay Packers before joining Seattle. He also punted for the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers. One of four University of Regina products on NFL rosters last season, Ryan has an affinity for Saskatchewan, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to see him back in Canada for one last kick at his career.
