It would take two touchdowns from players in for injured players and a field goal as time expired but the University of Regina Rams ended up winning a wild one against the UBC Thunderbirds at Mosaic Stadium Friday night.
Star running back Atlee Simon was not playing in the game due to a shoulder injury so it was up to Kyle Borsa to shoulder the load.
The Rams running game wouldn’t miss a beat with Borsa in at running back, going off for 119 yards and a touchdown.
Quarterback Noah Picton would need to leave the game briefly during the first quarter but Seb Britton took advantage of his only pass during Picton’s absence, finding Bennett Stusek for a 23-yard pass.
But despite only giving up one touchdown, the Rams could never pull away from the Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds defence would cause the Rams offence to fumble the ball five times and sacked Picton six times.
The game would ultimately come down to a field goal from Rams kicker Aldo Galvan. Galvan, who was perfect in the season before missing his first two kicks of Friday’s game, missed a 40-yard one but two unnecessary roughness penalties gave the Rams kicker another chance from 10-yards out.
Galvan hit the chip shot and gave the Rams the win to improve to 2-1 on the season.
During the game, Picton threw for 313 yards which now puts him into sole possession of second place on the U Sports all-time passing yards list.
The Rams will travel to Saskatoon to take on the Huskies next Friday.
