Should we start the annual revamp the CFL playoff format now….. or later?
There are a few theories.
- Keep the same format, no matter the fact three teams in the West could have better records than the number one team in the East which gets the automatic bye to the semi-final.
- Get rid of the divisions and keep the six-team format with the top two teams making it to the semi-final weekend. The other four play for the final two spots in the final four.
- Wally Buono’s rule that we are reminded of by Kirk Penton of The Athletic. Wally actually wants to see seven teams make the playoffs with the top team getting a bye to the final four and the other six playing for the other three spots. Buono’s mindset is you’d have an extra game, meaning an extra gate for one lucky team. And in the CFL that’s great.
- Cut the playoffs down to make the regular season more important and just start with the semifinals. It would also shorten the season and move the Grey Cup up.
All three new formats reward the best in the regular season.
You can’t say that for the current one.
