The first caller into Wednesday’s Green Zone made a ridiculous statement about the Saskatchewan Roughriders potentially disciplining defensive end Charleston Hughes.
The caller believed the Roughriders shouldn’t suspend Hughes because the CFL team was approaching an important part of the schedule, so suspending him would likely hurt the Roughriders heading into the playoffs.
Any decision to discipline Hughes cannot be related to the team’s situation or the fact Hughes is having an all-star season. Even in this province, the football team is not more important than the law.
Hughes has been charged with impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample. The Roughriders visibly support the province’s Safe Ride program, which is intended to reduce impaired driving in Saskatchewan. The community-owned team has taken immediate action before by releasing other players charged with crimes. They don’t have to release Hughes, but there’s a need to show they really do support the Safe Ride program.
