Regina police believe a shooting that happened in the city’s Cathedral area on Saturday night was connected to an attempted carjacking soon after.
At about 9:30 p.m., police said a 22-year-old man was shot in the 3500 block of 13th Avenue, across from Connaught Community School.
Police said he was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
Many neighbourhood residents were unaware the incident even took place.
Glenna Stoner, a resident of close to 60 years, said the area is a safe one.
Any kind of disturbance, Stoner attributes to the Saskatchewan Roughriders game at Mosaic Stadium, located about 500 metres away.
Many fans park their vehicles in the area, she said.
“I didn’t really pay much attention to it because there’s always noise coming from over there when there are events on,” Stoner said. “It’s always been a great neighbourhood to live in.”
A half hour after the shooting, at 10 p.m., police said two men — one armed with a gun — approached a vehicle parked in the 1600 block of Cowan Crescent, near École Monseigneur de Laval.
According to police, the men demanded the victim’s vehicle and then fired a gun.
No one was hurt.
When the victim refused to give up the vehicle, the suspects fled the scene in a dark-coloured SUV.
Once again, the incident caught residents off-guard.
“I have been here for 29 years and it has generally been a safe neighbourhood. I raised two boys here,” said Gwen Paulhus.
Paulhus said the street was busy that night, with people and cars.
She said there was a function going on at the school.
Regina police told 980 CJME on Sunday afternoon they believe at least one of the suspects involved in the carjacking was involved in the shooting of the 22-year-old.
As the investigation continues, police are asking for the public’s help in locating two suspects identified during the carjacking.
The first man is described as six feet tall and heavy set. He was wearing dark clothing at the time of the incident.
The second man is described as six feet tall.
He was wearing a dark hoodie, baseball hat with a red bandana covering his face, and was carrying a gun.
