An Alberta semi driver is dead after police said he was driving while distracted west of Moose Jaw Thursday morning.
In an emailed news release, RCMP said the 24-year-old Calgarian was driving eastbound on Highway 1 near Parkbeg shortly before 9 a.m.
The release said the crash caused the semi to roll and block the eastbound lanes of the highway.
“Preliminary investigation reveals the driver was not wearing his seat belt and was driving while distracted,” the release indicated.
The driver was the only person in the semi; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Ministry of Highways response team and RCMP blocked off the eastbound lanes of the highway and rerouted traffic through a detour.
The road reopened at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Police are still investigating the crash.
