It’s the time of year when everyone recounts the events of 2018, a task I’m not very good at without Internet search engines.
I remember the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl, the Calgary Stampeders won the Grey Cup, my Milwaukee Brewers nearly made the World Series, Brooke Henderson won the Canadian Women’s Open and Tiger Woods was back on television for a good reason.
But the two resonating images from this past year occurred a few months apart. They revolve around the same sport and juxtapose the agony and ecstasy, the tragedy and joy, that transcended hockey.
First came the Humboldt Broncos bus crash, with the unspeakable horror of 13 injuries, 16 deaths and how the world came together afterwards in compassion and grief. Two months later, the Washington Capitals won the Stanley Cup, sparking sheer joy and endless celebrations by captain Alexander Ovechkin and his teammates.
Nobody ever wanted the first event to happen. And the second event will never erase the first, but in some small way it helped.
