Let’s go outside!
While I haven’t hidden the fact that I think outdoor games are overdone in the NHL, I’ve always said they are what they are. They’re a great way for the league to bring in advertising revenue, fringe fans, and with them going to a neutral non-NHL market, what a great way to engage an already hockey-mad province here in Saskatchewan.
This October there will be two very good Canadian clubs playing in our own backyard and this time it is outside and it actually matters.
This won’t be another pre-season game where the stars of teams don’t even make the trip. You’ll see Patrik Laine, Matthew Tkachuk, Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, Mark Scheiffele and Blake Wheeler with many more stars in the lineup.
And while the price tag may have some hesitating, it’ll be priced like your average premiere NHL event. For me, there isn’t a debate over whether 33,000 plus pay the money. It’ll be a sell-out. And the weather shouldn’t be as miserable as the original Heritage Classic in Edmonton.
The biggest debate will be, who will actually have home ice advantage? I know an equal amount of Flames fans as I do Jet fans.
