Two out-of-province companies are being fined after a man’s forearm got entangled in a moving gear of a power tong nearly two years ago.
Calgary-based Western Energy Services Corp., operating as Horizon Drilling, pleaded guilty and failing to ensure that work was sufficiently and competently supervised which resulted in a serious injury to a worker.
It was fined $71,429 plus a surcharge of $28,571 – a total of $100,000.
Great Western Tong Services Ltd. of Virden, Manitoba was also fined in the incident. It pleaded guilty to failing to provide an effective safeguard where a worker may contact a dangerous moving part of a machine which resulted in an injury.
It was fined $25,000 plus a $10,000 surcharge.
Both companies’ pleas were entered at Weyburn Provincial Court on Jan. 15, 2019.
The incident occurred on March 19, 2017.
