The University of Regina Cougars men’s basketball team clinched their spot in the Canada West playoffs over the weekend, with a sweep over the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack.
The weekend started with a wild 88-87 overtime win for the team Friday. The Cougars trailed the Wolfpack by 22 points at one point in the first half.
The game was sent to overtime after an acrobatic, off-balance three-point shot from Kameron Vales with only 16 seconds left in regulation.
Samuel Hillis – who finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds – scored the game-winning bucket with eight seconds left in the overtime frame.
The team’s victory, coupled with a Mount Royal loss, sent the team to the playoffs for the fourth straight season.
The U of R edged out a seven point win Saturday, thanks to Myles Hamilton providing the spark the team needed in the fourth quarter.
Hamilton scored 10 of his 22 points in the final quarter and scored the Cougars’ final four field goals.
The weekend sweep improves the Cougars record to 12-4 and in contention to either host a play-in conference game or a conference quarterfinals series.
Cougars women’s basketball team earns weekend sweep
The women’s basketball team got their second weekend sweep in a row, winning both games against the Wolfpack.
The Cougars – ranked at number nine in the country – earned a 75-52 win on Friday. The team held Thompson Rivers scoreless for nearly a full quarter in the second half of the game.
Kyanna Giles had another double-double for Regina – she scored 13 points and hauled in 16 rebounds. It’s her second double-double in a row and fifth of the season.
The team started strong in their Saturday game and continued with a strong second-half en route to a 72-44 win.
Women’s volleyball team extends win streak to 4
The Cougars volleyball team continued in their winning ways as Taylor Ungar inches her way closer to the Canada West record books.
After the weekend games, Ungar sits 31 digs away from the all-time Canada West record held by Jessica Niles.
The Cougars took a three-set win over Brandon Friday night.
Satomi Togawa finished with 34 assists and 10 digs with Ungar leading all players with 11 digs.
The Cougars walked away the victories on Saturday as well, winning a four-set match.
The win improved Regina’s record to 10-8 as the team tries to keep pace with UBC for fourth place in the Canada West standings.
Men’s hockey splits weekend with Manitoba
The U of R men’s hockey team lost the first game but finally put an end to their five-game skid against Manitoba over the weekend.
The Bisons used a four-goal third period to win Friday’s game.
The Cougars flipped the script on Saturday when it rattled off five straight goals to come from behind for a 6-3 win.
Brandon Holtby got his the first win of his U SPORTS career in net for the Cougars, stopping 24 shots in 40 minutes of work.
Women’s hockey team loses both Bisons games
The U of R women’s hockey team dropped both games to the Manitoba Bisons on the weekend.
Manitoba – who is ranked third in the nation – won 3-1 on Friday and followed it up with a 7-3 win Saturday.
The team sits in fifth place and eight points above Lethbridge for a playoff spot in Canada West.
