Peter Chiarelli fired my brother and traded away my neighbour.
He made me no longer care for the Edmonton Oilers, the NHL team that employed my father for 28 years. But that’s not why Chiarelli should be fired as Edmonton’s general manager. The Oilers weren’t very good when Chiarelli, just fired by the Boston Bruins, joined the Oilers in 2015. He was supposed to make them better, helped by the gift of superstar Connor McDavid in the draft lottery.
He subsequently purged the scouting staff, dumping my brother and some other former cohorts of my late dad who had once made the franchise respectable. Chiarelli also dealt Jordan Eberle, my dad’s final, symbolic draft choice and a shinny teammate from our east-end Regina street.
Chiarelli hasn’t made a good managerial move since he arrived. He dumps players and coaches, desperately trying to find something of value. Now he’s got an old-school coach on a short-team deal in Ken Hitchcock, who can’t motivate the overpaid, uninspired lineup of backup singers. He waived Ryan Spooner, who was supposed to replace Eberle. And now Chiarelli needs to be replaced.
