Moose Jaw’s quest to reclaim the title of having the world’s tallest moose has help from the other side of the country.
Moosehead Breweries, a New Brunswick company, announced on Wednesday it will donate $25,000 to help Mac the Moose regain the title he lost to Norway’s Storelgen.
“It was a no-brainer. As soon as we heard about the story, we felt compelled to lend some support,” said Trevor Grant, Moosehead’s vice-president of marketing.
“Not only is it the icon of our business and our brand, we do think it is a symbol that Canadians relate to.”
Moose Jaw mayor Fraser Tolmie said Moosehead’s contribution will not result in any corporate branding on Mac.
“I don’t think we’re going to alter his form in using him as advertising. Moosehead Breweries has been very respectful of that,” he said.
Tourism Moose Jaw’s plan is to give Mac a larger set of antlers if engineers determine that is structurally possible.
Tolmie said they will look at other options if that isn’t the case.
He said the estimated cost of the project is $50,000.
So far, about $12,000 has been raised from GoFundMe and a local business donated another $2,500.
“It’s been really bringing our city together, our province together and our country together,” Tolmie said.
