It appears that Regina’s homeless shelters and crisis services aren’t having to scramble too much in the cold the city’s been under.
John McFadyen, executive director of Mobile Crisis Services in Regina, said since the beginning of the month they’d had a normal call volume, but it picked up a bit on Tuesday.
He said that while shelters in the city have been more full than usual in this cold, they’ve been able to find space for people.
“Most of the shelters are prepared – even when they get to the point where they’re getting to their maximum – they have an overflow capability where they can then have that flexibility to take other people to ensure that nobody’s left out in the cold.”
McFadyen said he’s happy with the donations Mobile Crisis Services has been getting from the community – things like mitts and toques – and he said they’re set to get about 30 winter jackets on Friday for people who are in need.
Mobile Crisis Services is a group that works with other organizations to help people in need – directing them to the organizations that best fulfill their needs. McFadyen said the group works with social services, financial assistance programs, and homeless shelters, as well as the city police and the brief detox shelter.
