Thank goodness that we have intellectuals at universities to come up with random mathematical equations to decide who should be ranked one through 12 in men’s and women’s basketball.
The leagues decided that because of unbalanced schedules they need some math to figure out who is who, so road wins against good teams mean more than home wins against bad ones … and on and on.
The math is known as RPI, or rating percentage index.
This year it’s head-scratching on the women’s side of U Sports that the University of Regina went undefeated against the top two teams in terms of RPI and had more total wins than those teams, Saskatchewan and Calgary. But they somehow finished 3rd.
These confusing trends have been going on for three years now. Enough is enough.
Thing is, it’s an unbalanced schedule in football as well, and yet no math is required. They just go by wins and losses. Imagine leaving it up to the most basic of math. Who has more wins?
Keep it simple stupid. The KISS method is usually the best.
