Led by Grade 11 student Jade Belmore, the LeBoldus Golden Suns girls basketball team added to what’s been an impressive run over the past couple seasons with a championship at the 67th Luther Invitational Tournament.
The team overcame an early deficit en route to a 70-57 win over the Lethbridge College Institute Clippers.
“It’s awesome, I think that we’ve been working very hard and I think we earned this and it’s really exciting to be here since it’s just such a big tournament,” said Belmore, who was the tournament’s MVP.
While Belmore has been one of the most impressive high school basketball players in recent memory, a couple of longtime teammates have also been keys to the Golden Suns’ winning ways.
Belmore, Hannah Jennings, Maren Tunison and Callum Kraft have been playing basketball at various competitive levels together since elementary school.
Coach Garrett Kot said all four girls came to LeBoldus with years of playing experience.
“They started young, which again, all good basketball players do,” Kot said.
While LeBoldus has a reputation of being a strong basketball school in Regina, Kot said adding all four girls to the team brought them to a new level.
“They just kind of changed the culture of the team, we became a little more focused, obviously talent level came up huge and it was a big success for us last year,” Kot said.
The team went undefeated and won the provincial basketball title during the girls’ first full season with the team.
“I’m really glad to have them by my side. We’re going through the journey together and I think that’s really good,” Belmore said.
The team will be looking for their second straight provincial title this season, currently sitting 9-0 on the season.
And there might be a chance to see the success continue next season – all four girl’s are set to return to the team for their senior seasons.
