The CFL’s free-agent frenzy officially begins Tuesday. But don’t for one second believe that most of the deals haven’t already been worked out.
The big-name quarterbacks — Mike Reilly, Bo Levi Mitchell, Trevor Harris, Jonathan Jennings and Ricky Ray — certainly know what they will be doing next season and how much they will get paid. Pretty close, anyway. There might be a few more discussions, a few desperate offers and some take-it-or-leave-it deals before everything is finalized.
That’s because there are agents involved. One agent actually represents most of the pending free-agent quarterbacks. If that agent doesn’t already have everything figured out, he’s not doing his job, even though it’s technically illegal in the CFL to conduct negotiations until those contracts officially expire tomorrow.
With about 300 free agents there are going to be lots of stories in the upcoming days. There will be euphoria and heartbreak as fans learn who is going where. Some teams will literally fall out of Grey Cup contention this week. And it all starts with the quarterbacks.
