The extreme cold is back in Saskatchewan for a second day, with temperatures falling into the -30s throughout most of the province’s southern half.
Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for most areas south of Meadow Lake and Prince Albert, extending all the way down to the U.S. border.
The warning covers areas around the Battlefords, Rosetown, Swift Current, Carlyle, Regina, Saskatoon and others.
Areas around Humboldt, Conora and Yorkton aren’t covered by the warning.
In Regina at 7 a.m., the temperature was at -27 C with a wind chill value of -38; Saskatoon was colder at -34 and a wind chill value of -44.
The Bridge City was also the coldest spot in the province Thursday morning.
Along with its -29 temperature, Prince Albert had ice crystals in the air and a wind chill value of -37.
Even normally warm Swift Current was frigid to start the day, sitting at -28 with a wind chill value of -39.
Environment Canada said in its weather warning that “another cold night is expected tonight as the ridge of high pressure remains over southern Saskatchewan.”
Cold weather “risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors and those without proper shelter.”
The weather agency said that frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with cold wind chill values.
