Regina, Hamilton or Montreal?
Those are the cities bidding for the 2020 Grey Cup. The winner will be announced Thursday evening. Hamilton last hosted the Grey Cup in 1996. Montreal in 2008. Regina in 2013. If the decision were based solely on time elapsed since being the Grey Cup host, Hamilton would get 2020. If it were based solely on being the best place to visit, Montreal would get 2020. Because the decision will be based on facilities and economic success, Regina has to be the leading contender.
Mosaic Stadium is the newest building in the CFL, with the image of a rock star, and it’s nestled into Evraz Place, a collection of buildings that are ready-made for hospitality rooms, parties and meet-and-greets. Montreal’s parties will be mainly on Crescent Street, but filling cavernous Olympic Stadium will be a challenge. Hamilton has a new stadium, Tim Hortons Field, but there’s a supreme shortage of hotel rooms in Steeltown.
Regina will be a surefire sellout. Even bad November weather can’t curtail the party atmosphere surrounding Grey Cup. There are lots of reasons to bring the Grey Cup back to Saskatchewan, but that doesn’t guarantee anything.
