By 9 a.m. Tuesday, Environment Canada ended the extreme cold warnings it had issued earlier in the day for parts of south and central Saskatchewan, including Regina and areas around Humboldt, Outlook and Watrous.
The weather agency said it had expected a period of very cold wind chills, giving values of colder than -40 C in those areas.
By 6 a.m., Regina was at -28, with a wind chill value of -40. Watrous was the cold spot in the province at -31 and a wind chill of -42.
Lighter winds meant Saskatoon and Moose Jaw did not have extreme cold warnings, but both cities were still below -20 C Tuesday morning.
The weather agency advised people to stay warm and cover up since frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with a wind chill.
Environment Canada predicts that Regina will hit a high of -14 Tuesday at about 2 p.m., with a wind chill value of -23. It’s forecasting an overnight low of -18 with a -28 wind chill value.
