The CFL has often been criticized for being out of the “news cycle” in the off-season. Other than free agency and the Canadian draft in May, the league has a history of winter hibernation.
Times have changed with Randy Ambrosie as commissioner. As he said going into his first off-season, “Now the business season begins.”
The 2020 Grey Cup announcement has come with quite a bit of fanfare, and earlier this week it was announced that Italy is the ninth country to partner with the league to help grow the game.
Not every idea will be embraced by fans. I have found the reaction to these international partnerships to be mixed.
Ambrosie, who is not only a former player but solid in business, is doing what he can to keep the league strong through sound financial decisions and partnerships. He also appears to be working at keeping the CFL relevant for 12 months of the year.
Keeping the league top of mind in the off-season is a challenge in some markets. Not only is Ambrosie embracing that challenge, but he’s succeeding.
