Good friend Murray McCormick of the Regina Leader-Post and Saskatoon StarPhoenix reported that the 2013 Grey Cup generated $68 million in economic impact for the city of Regina. That was six years ago at the old Taylor Field, a venue which probably should have been demolished years before that.
Now, thanks to a $280-million investment from the city, the province and others, a state-of-the-art facility sits in the provincial capital — and it will host the 2020 Grey Cup game.
Economic impact figures from the event should exceed the numbers from 2013. Former mayor Pat Fiacco, current mayor Michael Fougere, and Regina’s councillors (past and present) deserve credit. They understand that sports amenities lead to, among other things, a massive economic
advantage.
Visionaries understood that damage beyond repair to Regina’s way of life would have taken place in 2012 had the go-ahead not been given to build Mosaic Stadium.
Regina’s leaders were among those who realize these investments pay for themselves in a big way. One of those many payoffs happened on Thursday.
Well done.
