Another Saskatchewan team has gone down in flames, leaving this curling-crazy province wondering when it might again win a national championship.
Despite a decent week of preliminary action at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Robyn Silvernagle’s North Battleford foursome dropped back-to-back playoff games in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Crucial missed shots and surrendering big ends caused the rink’s undoing and left Saskatchewan with only one national women’s title in the last 22 years. Amber Holland won in 2011.
It’s worse for the men. As basically everyone in Saskatchewan knows, Rick Folk won this province’s last Brier in 1980. Saskatoon’s Kirk Muyres leads his Saskatoon rink into the 2019 Tim Hortons Brier, starting Friday in Brandon. Muyres has been at the Brier before, but not as a skip, and his rink can certainly be considered a contender.
There are always huge expectations for Saskatchewan teams to follow the winning traditions set by Ernie Richardson and Sandra Schmirler. Even with that pressure, it’s impossible to believe a Saskatchewan rink won’t soon win one of these things.
